CHAPTER 1

Right, all you young and old fine readers - welcome to an extraordinary tale - my story.

It will include my advertures, most of which involve God.  In fact, I know God well, as I will reveal.

I have, you see, been on some extraordinary journeys, upon which I met God.  I'll tell you about them as I go on.

But first, let's get some context, and I'll tell you a little story.  It was told to me a while ago by a very old man, who was standing in my bathroom for about ten minutes, after which he disappeared into thin air.  And the air was thin, because I was on a very high point in the Himalayas.  It was called RETURN OF THE KING.  And here it is.

Once Upon A Time there was a very popular king.

He unified the nation and all was well. germancastle

Then one day he was kidnapped and no one knew where he was, for he was locked up in a castle many many miles away.

And so, the people were horrified because they did know how the country should be ruled.

But a country needs to be ruled and unified, and so various people stepped forward with their ideas of what they thought the king would do in certain circumstances.

Thus there were many different factions, with all their different leaders, and all their different ideas of the king. They all believed very strongly in that they knew what the king would have done in various circumstances and so carried out laws in the king’s name.

But factions are factions. And so, whilst they all believed in and loved the same king, they were creating chaos. And it was a terrible chaos because the factions really believed they were the ones identified with the king.

And since the king was the ultimate power, ultimate power was being misused.

* * *

Then one day some clever grinning rascal of an intellectual made a big move for power. He suggested that all the factions found out what their common denominator was and said that the common denominator, which was him, should be king.

Because many people were so tired with squabble, many thought this was a good idea.

But, this did not unite the people either. Instead it just created another faction, because common denominators are not kings. And so the chaos ensued.

* * *

Then one day, many years later, the king escaped his captors and returned to his country. He was horrified by all the chaos that had occurred in his name when he was away, and he went straight to the government buildings and asked to be let in.

But when he told them he was the king, no one believed him, for he was in rags and had changed so much.

He saw the grinning intellectual and shouted to him: ‘Let me in, because I am the king!’

The grinning intellectual just smiled, waved and entered his luxurious chambers.

The king was enraged. And was forced to find lodgings in the city.

He tried to tell a few people that he was king, and should be in power to bring back some sense of cohesion in the nation. But people just laughed at him. One even punched him in the face.

* * *

And so the king got a normal job and made some friends. He told many of these friends over coffee or ales that he was the real king. And they believed him, not just because he had told them so, but through what he said, how he spoke, how he did things, how he thought. And yet his friends came from all of the different factions.

And so, slowly another faction emerged – the faction of the man who said he was king.onthethrone

But the difference was that the king’s faction joined people from all factions in a very real way – the way of the king.

And so, as time went on there became less and less need for the factions, because the king was back, and there was no need to second guess what he might or might not have done.

And so it was not long before the grinning intellectual and all the leaders of the factions were toppled and the king was returned to his rightful place on the throne and true kingship returned.

And everything was brought back to order, which is to say that as much unity, lightness, humour, fulfilment and good as is possible in any society were now in the ascendant and all was good.

And that’s the end of the little story.
